| October 14 Weems Creek Annapolis, Maryland We are secured to a mooring ball here in Weems Creek, just up the Severn River from the Naval Academy. We left Cape May on Tuesday October 12, and had a wonderful sail up Delaware Bay to the C&D Canal. We anchored for the night in Chesapeake City. Chespeake City is a quaint little community that sprung up along the canal to service the canal boats. There is a canal museum here that chronicles the history of the C&D Canal from its inception to present day. The canal connects the top of Delaware Bay with the top of the Chesapeake Bay, saving ships about 400 miles of sailing to get to places well up the Chesapeake like Washington D.C. and Baltimore. It dates from the early 1800's, and has been widened and deepened as the ships that used it changed. Now it is about 40 feet deep, and 450 feet wide with huge high intensity lights every 150 yards that illuminate the shoreline for nightime travel. Cheaspeake City has somehow maintained is Victorian charm. It has several bed-and-breakfasts, interesting gift shops and a gallery or two. The quiet, combined with the quaintness of this little town attracts visitors. Now that we are here in the sailing mecca of the east we have much we want to see and do |
